What We’re Reading & Listening To:
📊 ThredUp’s 2025 Resale Report just dropped: The report showcases the rapid growth and shifting dynamics of the secondhand apparel market. Here are some things that stood out:
Online resale continues to surge, marking its second consecutive year of accelerated growth in 2024. The market is projected to nearly double, reaching $40 billion within five years.
Resale incentives drive brand engagement—47% of consumers are more likely to make a first-time purchase with a brand that offers shopping credit for trading in used apparel, a +25 point increase from 2024.
Younger generations are leading the resale movement, attempting to sell 52% of their unwanted apparel on average. 68% say that online resale has made it easier to responsibly part with items.
Peer-to-peer marketplaces dominate as the preferred online sales channel, with 31% of consumers favoring them over other platforms.
Social commerce is a powerful growth driver (many thanks to leadership by the iconic
!!)—86% of retail executives believe social commerce platforms will help them better promote and market resale programs to customers.
📓 The New York Times explores how Gen Z consumers influence and accelerate the lifecycle of trends: In its latest interactive piece, the NYT highlights the rapid rise and fall of trends within this demographic, emphasizing their role in creating viral moments and quickly moving on to the next big thing. The piece also discusses the impact of social media platforms in amplifying these trends and shaping Gen Z's consumption habits
🎧 / ⏯️ Kristine Locker, founder & CEO of Locker, shares her journey from Goldman Sachs to self-funding her startup in the latest episode of Hot Smart Rich: Kristine discusses the challenges of building a consumer startup, from investor rejection to costly mistakes like a failed $8K influencer campaign. The episode explores the rise of creator-led brands and the backlash against their funding strategies, as well as the evolving landscape of social commerce. Kristine opens up about the mental toll of entrepreneurship and why she’s betting everything on Locker’s future.
